Lauri; when I was an inpatient in the rehab hospital after my severe stroke in 1986, there was a beautiful lady there from Venezuela who was probably in her mid-forties. She had severe brain damage from the effects of the gas given to her by her dentist. I had never heard of such a thing, so I was surprised to see her in such bad shape from that. I hope your audience is aware of the damage they can cause.

In my own case, after I was awake in the emergency room, one of my doctors, the internist, said clearly, "If we can get him stabilized, we might be able to get him well enough to go to a nursing home. I was 46 years old at the time, and that was before any rehab work. Since then, I have been lucky enough to recover about 80% -- now being able to live completely independently except for not being able to drive anymore because of seizure activity. Plus I need occasional help because of having only one hand to do things around my house.

I will say that the stupid comment about the nursing home was a great motivator to recover for me, but it could have worked in the reverse for many people, especially older patients there. Good luck in your work. It is needed for sure. John
