A recent visit to my doctor (who looks like he should still be going to frat parties on campus) shows me in a small way the misunderstandings that can exist in the medical community.
My doctor has "known about me" for about four years now; he knows I have cerebral palsy, but Ive only met with him briefly for annual checkups because Im healthy.
This visit was also no big deal, but my wife, Pam, and I were concerned about a mole on my back and wanted to confirm it was nothing to worry about.
In a rush, his nurse (who also looked like she was fresh out of school) escorted us both from the waiting room and started asking Pam why we had made the appointment ("And why are you seeing the doctor today?") before we even got to examination room.
I had grabbed my crutches and was breathlessly trying to keep up with them both. I find it difficult to walk and talk at the same time, so I didnt get a chance to answer her or to even introduce her to Pam.
Pam finally responded about the mole.
When we got to the exam room, the nurse quickly took my blood pressure while I was still standing bracing myself with one crutch even though there were two chairs in the room. The nurse told Pam my blood pressure was high. I sat down.
"And what relationship are you?" the nurse asked Pam, obviously thinking she was my caretaker.
"This is Pam, my wife," I finally had a chance to say. "Could you take my blood pressure again on this arm?" I knew from experience that, because of my CP, my left arm often gave inaccurate blood pressure readings. It was normal.
The doctor came in. His first words: "And how are we today?"
"Good," I responded.
"As good as can be expected," he replied, quickly glancing through my charts.
I felt like he was talking to an elderly man who had a grave illness. I wanted to say (but didn't): "I'm not suffering, Doc."
