Inappropriate Treatment from Dentists, Doctors

Story

I am a disability-awareness trainer, and I am presenting a workshop to dentists in May. I would like to hear from anyone with a story about a dentist or doctor who did not know how to treat you appropriately because he/she was ignorant about your disability.

For instance, I have a friend with extensive CP involvement who found it difficult to

find a dentist willing to treat him because most were frightened by his muscle spasms. One dentist actually said that his teeth didn't matter because he was so disabled!

Another reason I’m motivated to approach dentist and doctor conventions about speaking is this experience. I have another friend who is physically disabled by quadriplegia. She was in the hospital, extremely ill with an infection, but she was fully conscious and awake. Doctors and nurses who came into her room stood over her and talked about her as if she was an inanimate object. They calmly discussed her chances of survival, which were not promising, and seemed to be unconcerned by her hearing them.

She was laying there, looking at them, with her eyes wide open, and they didn't even care! She was furious, but she was unable to speak due to the respirator in her mouth.

Please, any input that you want dentists or doctors to have – I'd love to hear it!
My goal is to help stop these 'professionals' from thinking of us as rubber dolls
they can practice on!
