Traumatic Brain Injury Colleen
Colleen was our first patient when we opened our center Feb. 11, 2002. She was severely injured on her graduation night four years ago. When she came to us she could not swallow, was tube fed, could not speak, oxygen saturations ranged in the 80s and color was very pale. She had no meaningful movements or control, except of her big toe. Colleen could answer yes questions by moving her big toe of her right foot. She had a wheelchair that held her head and body in place. She had a lot of tone (tightness) in her muscles although she has had physical therapy for four years to prevent additional problems. Due to her total lack of mobility, she was lifted into the chamber on a bath blanket, positioned with props, and the oxygen hood placed by an attendant. The chamber holds three people, so she was not alone and could be adjusted as necessary. We have seen a major difference in Colleen since she received her first 40 treatments. We wanted to share her story with others that may feel without hope. Her parents have told us to feel free to tell Colleens story. I am enclosing an e-mail from her mother to tell her side. We are finding that hyperbaric therapy makes a major difference for many disabling conditions. It can change the quality of life and give new hope for a future.

Dear Karen,
We wish to thank you and your staff for the WONDERFUL treatment she received while using your facility. Your kindness, thoughtfulness and consideration will never be forgotten. We are still seeing the benefits of Colleen's treatments even though it has been one month since her last treatment. She has benefited immensely!! The following is a list the benefits:
Her blood oxygen still remains in the high 90's (where before it was in the mid 80's) She didn't have the foul breath odor while taking treatments although it did return two weeks after the treatments stopped She takes deeper breaths She is alert a lot more often Her tone has decreased dramatically!! (Even her doctor agreed although he would not acknowledge HBO. She has a deep muscle therapist who couldn't believe the change in Colleen's muscles while she was receiving HBO. She is able to use her muscles more. Before she would try to move her arms and legs with minimum assistance but she was unable to, due to the fact that she couldn't concentrate as well and the tone. She moves her head more and is gradually working her way to holding her head up for a longer period of time.
She was more vocal (making sounds) & said Ma-Ma five times and told her aide "Pay back". Sadly she has not been as vocal since. It seems that since she isn't receiving HBO that her ability to talk has slowed down dramatically. She is still trying & I believe she will make it. (She's too stubborn & God knows it) Colleen's range of motion has increased 20%. She now opens her mouth and lets you get inside to brush her teeth & even swab her tongue with mouthwash!! Before she would hardly let you get into her mouth. Speech therapist couldn't believe how much better her jaw and tongue movement improved since HBO. She has better trunk control. She can actually sit up without falling over. She was not sick at all while receiving HBO. Before the treatments you couldn't take her out when it was cold or windy so needless to say we didn't get out of the house. It was so nice to be able to take her out and not worry about her getting sick while she received HBO. Starting last week she started coughing, runny nose & red eyes when we take her out.
So we do thank you for opening up the hyperbaric center, because I know for a fact that it DOES help brain injury!!!
God bless you all!!
