Traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy,
and a permanent, but unnoticeable, disability

Story

This unparalleled tragedy began for me when I was stuck in Vietnam and on the 23-day troopship ride that took this DRAFTED and recently married pacifist there in the spring of   '65. That's where I developed PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) because of the daily stress that I had to face and without the benefit of ammunition in a war zone, for ALL of Vietnam was a war zone!

However, what I didn't know was that our "peace" president, LBJ, had lied through his teeth to fully involve this country in that tiny country. I escaped death there, "only" to be figuratively MURDERED, again, in the prime of my life when my AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation-rare) burst on 6 Feb 72, and forced me, like the army, to rely on the "great" VA hospital for help of the constructive nature.

Unfortunately, I was in far worse shape after my month hospitalization after the trainee neurosurgeons did their dirty work. They repaired the AVM, make no mistake about it. But, in the process, they did something to my frontal lobes, for my supposedly successful brain surgery took place there, and the frontal lobes are necessary for making sound decisions. It was very deep within my frontal lobes and, closely, resembles a frontal lobotomy!

At any rate, I was turned into a person who had grand mal epileptic seizures which were NOT supposed to be a problem, according to my medical discharge records. I had my first of many grand mals while playing bridge, my FAVORITE hobby. And, because I was a roofing contractor, I couldn't do that anymore! Thus, with the "skillful" incision of a trainee doctors scalpel, BOTH my vocation (roofing) and avocation (bridge) were obliterated! I, also, suffered a dramatic personality change which NO ONE told me about!

After I had endured the rigors of "living" in Vietnam, I, also, had to endure the monster that I had become AFTER enduring another life threatening stressor. I, erroneously, thought that Vietnam (age 23) was to be the end of my stressful living. I was dead wrong, for the trainee doctors used my then-svelte body 6-years, later, for their own devices and education!

All that I know is that I'm no longer the same person that I, once, was, and despise everyday that is spent on this earth and greatly anticipating my eventual departure, just as I was anticipating the end of my patriotic duty to this country in Vietnam earlier in my life. Thankfully, it, eventually, came but it left its mark (mentally) on me. I STILL have memories (bad) of the time wasted there.

The amount of reading about Vietnam that I do only confirms what only SUSPECTED! I'm sorry that I ever heard of the place, in fact, for it not only was the ONLY war we ever lost but was also the most destructive war in the HISTORY of the world. Few people know that! "The most profound of sin is tragedy unremembered." How, sadly, true!

The vestige of Dick Dettrey, a once-proud man withOUT a country.

P.S. I, for one, will NEVER forget the horrors of Vietnam or the stress of those grand mal seizures! I, really, wish that I could, believe me!
