Story

I broke my neck 22.5 years ago when I was twelve. It was two weeks after school was dismissed. I had gone to my neighborhood elementary school. Sixth grade was in the past, and seventh grade in junior high, Brooks, was in the future. Now, however, it was training time for the summer swimming season.

The principle didn't want me to go to Brooks. As I recall, it was a matter of too much paperwork and too much bother. The "mainstreamed" school had no honors classes as Brooks did. There was also a long bus ride. They "lost" my file. As soon as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was mentioned, my file was suddenly found. There are three incidents that are seared in my memory.

(1) I ran for student government one year. My opponent's verbal slogan was, "Don't vote for Perel; she can't stand-up for the issues." As a twelve/thirteen-year-old, I felt my innards being eviscerated.

(2) I was not allowed to take shop. No one even asked me. I took art twice. Holding a file between my teeth, I carved a block of balsa wood into an apple. (I don't recommend balsa wood as a source of dietary fiber.) I gave it a realistic paint job, too. Some members of the Board of Education came by and would not believe that I, a lowly quadriplegic, could create such a realistic apple. They didn't even believe my teacher.

(3) In a home economics class, one of the people in my "kitchen" was usually ill on cooking days. (No one is usually sick on cooking days.) One day we were all there -- all three of us. The teacher came up and said to the one who was not usually absent, "Well, (name), sometime you'll have to be absent so (other girl) will have to do everything by herself." We were all embarrassed. I was angry, yet said nothing. I was embarrassed for my silence as well.

In high school, I was not allowed to take short-hand, for I would always be too slow. The same for typing, but I now type 40 words/minute. I joined the debating club. They had wanted to exclude me from out of city meets and require that one of my parents accompany me to other meets. I was being segregated in a mainstreamed school. One phone call was all it took.

In graduate school, I went to a conference about secondary education and disability. WOW! What an experience? For the first time I was with other people with varying disabilities. We never needed to explain ourselves to one another because, regardless of the disability, there was a corollary in another disability. As a person with a disability, I finally felt free and liberated.
