Story

It is interesting to note that most of the leaders of the American Indian Movement (AIM) are dead or in prison.These people who were on the front lines of the fight to try to stem some of the worse abuse of native who Americans paid the supreme sacrifice.

In contrast, people with disabilities survive by competing to see who can be the loudest whiner and complainer.

I was with a lady who was in a wheelchair, and she spent the longest time telling me about all her complaints. I ask her what had she done about it and she said nothing. That pretty much sums up everything that we are talking about here. Many of us are little kids who want stuff from the guy or lady behind the desk. We are scared to death that they will turn us away, so we grin and tell them to bend over lower so we can kiss up better.

For now, we have the pity of the majority. They let us keep our entitlements. We now have a president who doesn't care about us and doesn't share our agenda. The conservative yahoos in Congress are very capable of coming after your SS check to pay for a big tax cut for their rich buddies. Two thirds of us didn't vote. It was inconvenient, or we did not want to be put to the trouble. Some of us don't have the cognitive ability to study issues, but most of us are just too lazy or too unmotivated to take positive action. Let them do it for us; they will take care of it for us.

There are a few of us out here raisin' hell and confronting the system. Most of us are centered on narrow personal interest topics that don't have broad appeal. Those little faceless people who work in the agencies that manage us have all the power and 90 percent of them are not disabled.

Let's see more of us out in the street -- more of us getting up in peoples faces and protesting. Let's see a little more hell raising and let that be our new way of survival.
