I was so impressed with the "Nike Ad" response and outcome that I am submitting a letter I received and feel that it is also abusive in action and attitude.

It infers that SCI is a sickness and that due to the SCI disability the attitude, behaviour and decision-making process is skewed. Could you help? The questions are less than intelligent and very demeaning. Such a survey is being conducted in an uncontrolled manner that the data gathered could be so flawed and then attributed to the SCI community that it is morally wrong and unethical.

I have enclosed the letter and a reply to my complaint letter I sent. Follow the link in the student's letter to the survey and see if you don't agree that the questions are both demeaning and totally ignorant of SCI disability.

I conducted a research of my own and the professor has been affiliated with tele-Marketing. This letter and many others were sent by several students to Yahoo's SCI disabled club members. One member told me that he received the same four letters from different students.

Infiltrating the club to obtain information to sell a product isn't necessarily my biggest complaint. The tone and implications of the survey itself are offensive. I want to enlist your help in obtaining responses to make them aware of their abusive actions.

We are group of graduate students who are examining several issues related to people with SCI, in particular, consumer attitudes, decision-making processes and consumer behaviors. We have undertaken this research for a number of reasons; however, the main ones involve our professor's research interests in social marketing and the willingness of a medical products company to help cover the expenses of the project. We are examining global attitudes and ones specifically related to the use of intermittent catheters.

We are now at the stage of conducting a nationwide online survey concerning these issues, and we need to inform people with SCI about this survey in order to get as many replies as possible. We would be very thankful if you would take the time to answer our survey, "spread the word" and help us get people with SCI to participate. The survey is totally anonymous and would take about 10 minutes to complete.

My name is Fredric Kropp and I am the professor teaching the marketing research course, so ultimately, the responsibility for the survey is mine. I have conducted much research related to social marketing and hope that a better understanding of people and issues can better help fill people's needs. Our focus on this project is to better understand attitudes, decision-making processes, and behaviors of people (persons) with SCI, recognizing, of course, that there will be great individual differences.

The genesis of this project involves my own friendship with a person who has SCI. He is Danish and was one of my graduate students when I taught in Australia. He currently works for a medical products company and is trying to make the shift in the way he does business to encompass this philosophy. He (and I) believe that it is empowering and respectful. The research my class is conducting was designed to look at some of these issues.

The survey was developed after many meetings with people with spinal cord injuries and the wording was carefully reviewed. The particular section that you may find objectionable was taken from an existing scale on locus of control - health. Our inclusion of the the scale is part of my research agenda, specifically designed to help understand attitudes and the decision process of individuals. In no way do we wish to infer that an individual with a spinal cord injury suffers a "sickness." The scale is designed to measure an individual's locus of control related to health care issues.
