Roberta, Karen and I started a study group Monday for Karen and I to help Roberta to gain some of the academic skills that she
lacks.
This was her first writing assignment (see below). I didn't expect it to be quite like
this and I'm some shaken. I know Roberta wrote this on her own, because she worked on a
part of it at my kitchen table. The assignment was to write about what her childhood/life
was like at the Laconia State School.
I expected to hear about how school classes consisted of being given coloring books and
paper dolls. This sounds more like a concentration camp.

"My name is Roberta Gallant. I live in Concord, New Hampshire, and have a mental
disability that causes me to learn slowly. I used to reside within Laconia, New Hampshire,
before moving to Concord on July 19, 1990.
"Through the Internet, I would like to share with the American general public my experience living at the former Laconia State School and Training Center. On October 27, 1956, my parents admitted me to the former Laconia State School and Training Center when I was 5 years old because of a birth defect. For two and one half decades, I resided at the Laconia State School and Training Center.
"After my mother and father placed me into the Laconia State School and Training Center, I became very at homesick. Every day and night I cried and sobbed. Therefore, I threw severe temper tantrums. I hated leaving mom and dad's house located in Berlin, New Hampshire.
"At the Laconia State School and Training Center I was neglected, ignored, and pushed around too much and pressured to perform uninterested tasks. Some of the staff and other residents orally and physically abused me constantly. Those people inside Laconia State School grew angry and hit, kicked and yelled at me. The ward attendants slapped and punched me. The attendants whipped me with wet towels, hairbrushes, paddles, belts, sticks, and metal or wooden coat hangers. The employees spat at, placed pillows or bed sheets over my face, and tried to smother me. With buckets, they quickly dumped cold water on my body and restrained me roughly.
"My personal belongings -- money, wallets, pocketbooks, change purses, wrist
watches, sunglasses, clothes, footwear, writing paper, envelopes, and stamps -- were also
stolen from me by them. Some staff people and many residents always laughed at and teased
me. They shoved me into the shower stalls and against walls as well. What do you think of
that?"
