This is the first time I have been here and tryuly believed (and still do) that my life would be on the big screen or a mini series! Kim, I can recognize the pain in your eloquent words regarding your family. It is a scenario that I too have lived through and now that I am disabeled due to my MS, I am a liar too.
Sure, it angered me tremendously and it also hurt to the same degree. Being allienated (as you put it "disowned") by my family decades ago due to their classic denial that Dr. Phil chants on his show, I have been where you are.
I will include my web site so you can read my biography to share with you the overwhelming achievements I persued and successfuly conquerd before being stricken with MS. I have not visited the site for awhile and updates are astounding in my life since I was literally FORCED to slow down.
I happened by this site only because I am a mover shaker in first gear now, but, I cannot cease the drive I have always had to help others which overall helps me. The classic symptoms of abuse, both mentally and physically compounded themselves into the panic attacks. The label "psycho" is my middle name.
One of the initial challenges I had was to learn to laugh at myself. I acknowledge my past bizarre behaviour and let it be known being nuts was okay but it did get in the way of my love life. People don't quite know how to respond to you when you acknowledge your awareness of past behavior. It is their problem if they cannot understand you not becoming defensive. I may not have said all that well, but I think you'll get the idea.
Back to why I stumbeled (fruedian slip!) upon this site. My propfessional status as a designer, among the many other things, was placed away and believed to never be visited again. It is a career that demands a lot of walking and carrying carpet samples. Forget it! BUT!
I have spent the last four years getting my life placed in perspective. It is a mantra for me that all things happen for a reason and I only recently, after putting a long list of ideas together for new businesses for using individual talents I bestow, entwined them all together and the last experience I had with living with my dissability is what triggered the idea.
A contractor was hired to come in and build a safe porch for me. Well, afrer 6 months, safety code ignored by him and his cutting corners...I fell through it and a new porch had toi be erected by a new contractor that knew I was over his shoulder in building it to safety code.
This entire situation cost the federally funded agency over $3000 ONLY because the firsyt contractor was abusing the system and the handicapped and elderly were the victims. Many of us are not as verbal as I and I did some research and have put together a new biz in offerring professional services to service agencies, realtors, the home builder association, networking with city officials, rv and auto dealers...the list is literally endless. I am offerring a service which to people like you and me!
I will shut up now. In wrapping this up, Kim, I can only say to you that attitude is all that it takes. All that matters is you. We are our own best friends and people will be cruel and nasty if they do not like themselves.
Enuff Dr. Phil for tonight! Actually my mental mentor was Dr. Wayne Dyer and a few others from the 70's...it didn't really c;ick until I was diagnosed in the late 1990's. Challenges for me today are to not use that ugly cane! Forget the high end heels! I used to have to wear matching underwear to what I wore on the outside. Argh! Life is too short.
Hopefully someday you will mentally come to the place I have regarding the family. My thoughts of mine are in the satisfaction of knowing that they will carry the guilt thoughts in their head for the remainder of their lives and I am truly happy and they hate it!
Hang in there girlfriend. Just because we are physically challenged does not make us less than others if you keep the most important thing in focus...A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!
