Story

Having been ill for quite sometime, I have spent a great deal of both day and night in my bed, sleeping and recovering from two surgeries. We have a beautiful home that has a small canal across the street from our front entrance. The back faces a very large lake.

Our home is really not that close to our neighbors, but, one afternoon while resting, I could hear my neighbors had company. Not really trying to eavesdrop, I couldn't help but pick up on some of the conversations. Some of the things being said such as, "While you are here, if you make any trouble, I will have those kids taken away from you faster than your head could spin." This sure made may ears seem sharper. Things like, "No, I won't lend you anymore money." And such other comments continued to be made.

I rolled over and went to sleep thinking about my poor neighbors and their problems whatever they were. "You leave Joan alone because she is very ill." I awoke with a start upon hearing my name.

The next thing I knew I was able to determine this was a young couple visiting. After the warning from the father, they had started to torment me when the parents were not at home.

One thing they did was to take a small branch from a tree and bang it on my house while shouting, "Crazy Joan lives next door." I started to get very nervous!

I mentioned this to my husband, and he said, "You must be hearing things, dear. I can't hear a sound. Even if they are right out there on their patio, there is a six-inch cement wall between us. We could never hear a word that was said." Even though I trusted Jim, I knew I could hear them talking from time to time.

One day I was all alone in the house when I heard a door slam. I knew it couldn't be Jim because he wasn't due home for several hours. Then I heard the same young couple talking, and the wife said, "I want her diamond bracelet."

He said, "No way! She'll call the police and I don't want to get arrested for breaking and entering."

I locked my bedroom door, put a chair up under the door knob, locked myself in my bathroom and called the police with my cell phone. The police came with guns drawn and surrounded my house. When they knocked on the front door and their dispatcher said they were there, I unlocked the doors and answered the front door.

"We have been all around your house and can find no one at all. Is anything missing?"

I replied, "No, nothing is missing. They left right after I called 911."

Days went by before I heard anything else. Then it started getting worse and worse. I don't recall what prompted this, but Social Services did come to take the children away. I was afraid of what the repercussion to this might be, but at least the children were safe. I was shaking from head to toe and once again Jim was not at home.

Later that same evening I heard them talking on the telephone.

Evidently, the young man had called a bail bondsman who was a friend he owed money to but wanted a favor moving something. A little later, I heard this man arrive. Then the young man was shouting something about giving him back his money. When he didn't get his money back, I heard a silenced gun shot ring out. I was getting more than frantic.

I didn't want to call the police again. I didn't know what to do when I heard a lot of screaming and crying. "I am losing the baby," the young girl shouted.

Evidentially she was pregnant with yet another child and was having a miscarriage.

All I could think were my neighbors must be away on vacation because they would never have put up with anything like this at all. Now, I started to tell Jim more and more about what I had heard.

He went out and walked all around our house as well as our entire property, coming back to report that the neighbors' house was in darkness and there wasn't a soul around.

What? Am I losing my mind? What could be happening here?

Finally, I heard nothing more and was so relieved.

It seemed like several weeks had passed and they were back. The same terrible kind of conversations were taking place -- only this time I heard my neighbors say they were leaving for Europe and the young couple would be staying there alone once again.

More and more of the same sort of thing went on. I could hear bullets with a silencer go off all night long. Every time I asked Jim about it, he would say, "I don't hear a thing." He would take another and another walk around the house like before, only to return with the same report.

No one was there and the house was in darkness.

Then I heard the most tragic thing of all. The young lady's parents must have come for a visit and they were all going traveling together. Before leaving, they all spent a day or so right next door. I heard this young mother tell her own mother she had a miscarriage a while back. Her Mom was shocked that she had never told her about it.

"How far along were you?" She asked her daughter.

"About four or five months," she replied.

"What did you do about the baby's funeral?"

The daughter told her mother, "We threw the baby right into the lake." Horrified, the poor mother hardly knew what to say because the lake is filled with alligators, snapping turtles, snakes and who knows what else.

"Joan, Joan wake up!" My husband was shouting and shaking me at the same time. I looked at him very strangely, not realizing who he even was for a second. When I became fully awake, I grabbed this wonderful man of mine.

"Jim, I love you so much, " I said. "I just had the worst nightmare of my life."

Well, after I told Jim the whole story about this horrendous nightmare, Jim called my doctor. The doctor told him, "Discontinue the new medicine I gave to Joan immediately as it can also cause hallucinations."

Ever since then, I sleep in peace and am gradually getting better each and everyday. Thank God, I can't hear a sound from my neighbor's house just as Jim had said. Also, before taking any new medications, I check with the doctor to find out what possible bad reactions I could have because I never want to experience anything like I just told you ever again.
