I was unable to live and pay bills on my SSD income. I heard about a program from SSD entitled "Program to Achieve Self Sufficiency" (PASS). Though I tried to find literature with complete details, there was NONE available, and out of desperation I applied for the program without end-to-end details of their requirements. I didn’t know those requirements are "made up" as they go along to suit someone in SSA's bureaucracy.

The result was that all the so-called support other agencies told me would be available was nothing but a continual confrontation. In the end, I simply gave up. They denied my last application at about the same time my house was hit by lightning for the 3rd or fifth or tenth time (I lost count). Plus during that time (1994-1996), I had to contend with a neighbor intent on destroying my property (with me in it), and the police conveniently ignored the on-going problem.

And when I couldn't get business problems resolved adequately by verbal negotiation, I asked for help from the local DA's office as well as the state’s AG office. All with absolutely NO help from them.

The company that sold me a computer with a three-year warrantee would not live up to their warrantee, and I had NO MONEY for a lawyer.

I still don't have money for a lawyer, and the local SSA has denied my request for a waiver on the so-called OVER-payment (the funds they added to my SSD for the PASS) without ever, repeat EVER, notifying me they had denied the waiver request in 1997! They have, in February this year, again denied my request for a waiver. Why? Because I cannot tell them I bought clothes or what other items I budgeted into my SSD income, because I COULDN’T SPEND WHAT I DIDN’T HAVE! I felt pressured to LIE, and we all know what happens to us if we stretch the truth even a little.

So I refused to LIE about buying clothes. I can't replace appliances that don't work, I can't fix the ones that might be repairable, I cannot buy medicine, or see a doctor (AND I NEED both). I can't buy glasses, get my cataract(s) taken care of or get help for any of the other multiple problems these SSA bureaucrats don't recognize as problems.

And I haven't had money to buy clothes, either, for a very long time. Nor get a plumber to repair whatever problem is causing my basement to be flooded.

Part of my problem is that I told them that, too. They don't like to be made to feel RESPONSIBLE or ACCOUNTABLE, so it must be my fault, my problem and my SSD funds that they take in order for them to get their reward from the government -- to replace those funds provided IN the PASS.

I was never told that, by applying for that PASS, I risked my SSD. Basically, if these mental giants get their way, I won't be able to pay any of my bills (i.e. keep a roof over my head). This way they insure that I become a ward of the state with NO rights, human or otherwise. And no visible roof to call my own.

IMHO. This is an abuse of power, inhumane and it violates all human decency. SSA has been abusing at least half the population for over 6 decades. You see, women, both disabled and elderly, are only given 1/4 what males receive from SSA under the excuse women live longer. But I feel that they have USED the money we paid out to SSA from our salaries, used it to empire build instead of making certain the funds were properly invested for our future needs. In other words, they mismanaged the funds taken from our payroll to suit their wants and needs -- NOT ours. They should have been a little more farsighted.

I don't begrudge men what they get. I just think it's pea-brained to think one segment of the population can live cheaper than another with less funds in a country that has a HIGH cost of living.

And all the flow-throughs get rich at our human-needs expense. DSS and other fantasy groups who claim to be "caring" for the poor, like the LEAP and food stamp programs: They are a FARCE! It is simply another CONTROL mechanism. Poverty, like the late Justice Blackman said, is "corrosive -- like a cancer."

I now have about 30 days to appeal SSA's denial for my waiver request. Legal aide does not "function" for the poor either, and I cannot afford legal help. I have not found any agency locally that could be relied upon for help. This is Colorado, the state of Prop 2 ½ -- the state where human rights is a joke!
