Story
What is the crip world like? Is it one big pity party? Is it dreaming of when we were whole or when we can one day be whole? Is it about snowing the normals, the walkers, the talkers, the attendants at the gate of hell?
Most of us have served time in one or another of the Rehab Centers. Taking one thing apart and put another together, putting something in slots and taking something out. Talking for hours on hours about how we feel when we don't really know how we feel. Wishing that someone would listen for a change: "Hey, this is what I want to do." Instead of being told and lead and instructed to do this or that. Many of us are prisoners in our Rehab. programs. They tell you to be realistic, to be rational, to face your limitations. It doesn't matter if you don't accept what they are talking about as your limitations. You are just a poor cripple, you ain't much in their eyes. Just someone to be shaped and molded and prodded to do what they think is best for you. They tell you if you don't cooperate they will ship you out, close your case and forget about you.
Why can't we reverse the tables and tell them the same thing? I am thinking they work for us. We are looking at five or six hundred a month in income from Social Security, and they are drawing down two and a half to three thousand a month. Plus they are getting retirement, insurance and sick leave and vacation. We have to live with our miserable selves every day of the year with no breaks.
The key to all of this is that, without us, they wouldn't exist. Without our miserable selves, no psychologist, no physical and occupational therapist, no rehab, no engineering, no rehab counselors, no independent living specialist, no nothing. There are a million plus of them who draw a pay check twice a month because we are here. We can turn the tables when we find our voices. To come around, to being able to speak out and speak up. Can we do that?
