The inner man or woman

Story

I have experienced so much that is built on a stream of consciousness about who we are or who we want to be. You come to recognize after a time that you can't change anyone.You can listen and hear the other person's soul crying out to you, but you can't change who a person is or who a person will be at any given time.

We who train in the field of counseling are taught first to listen.The human being is sacred to us who are professionals. We don't want to interfere with a person's life in a way that gives us power.

I can deal with people as they are, especially people with disabilities who have arrived at the place in time when I meet them after a often perilous journey. The thing that upsets me is the obvious bias of many professionals who are working in the field of disability rehabilitation. I met with one such person today. He was hired to work on job placement with the disabled. For two hours he sat and gave me every reason why people did not want to work. He assured me of how knowledgeable about the labor market he was. It seemed to me that what he had chosen to learn was all the negatives that society hold up to prevent people with disabilities from realizing their dreams.

One aptitude I have is to put myself in the place of the client because I have been one myself. I would not be comfortable working with him; his attitude and his words were turn off for me. If he could not dominate me; he would be uncomfortable with me. If I used self determination, he would fight me and find reasons to deny me what I sought.The only terms he would accept would be the ones that he dictated to me to follow.

I finally looked up from the note pad where I had made notes and told him, "I don't like your approach." He sat back in his chair and looked across the table at me, startled.

"We are both professionals," he said. "We are a team."

"No," I said. "I can't work off your agenda, and I can't be a part of your team." My next response was that I got up and walked out. I knew full well that he would call my supervisor, and I would hear about this encounter again. My response to him would not change who he was and his ability in the job he was occupying. I will carry my impression out into the community with me and share it with others.

In conclusion, should we as professionals let other professionals get away with things in the name of team work and inter-agency cooperation? I knew I had no friends and that incidents like this one just added to the enemy list out in the community of professionals I interacted with. In turning the tables on him, all I did was save my own self pride. Was it worthwhile? I guess only to me and my self pride.
