Why I Volunteer

Story

I never thought I'd not work to make a living. In 1993 I lost my job at Spring Arbor Distributor. I filled orders for Christian bookstores. I could not meet the production levels even after they lowered it for me.

At that time I was retested. The test showed I still had disabilities. They called it Minimal Brain disorder. The test also said I was depressed and anxious. The test showed that I had a Visual Spatial disorder, and a tracking problem.

Good Will came in and evaluated me at work to see if I could ever have done that job. There report said I could not work at Spring Arbor. They also said that I would never be able to work again.

It was hard to believe them, so I went back to school and took accounting clerk courses. In 1998 I graduated from PCC and got my accounting Clerk Certificate. The only problem with that was I still could not meet production levels.

During another year trying to find work. I became so stressed out about meeting production levels that I felt I would never get back to work. I decided that I need time away from looking for work.

I decided to volunteer. I started by Volunteering at the Blind Commission. This gave me a chance to use my computer skills. I went to the Gay Pride Parade, and asked the Human Rights Coalition to get me the paperwork for the City County Administration Council on Disabilities. Last year I was placed on the Community Residential Siting Committee. Now I am busy with all the Volunteer work I need. I have less pressure and do not have to meet Production Levels.
