Story

Human nature is a very funny thing. I could probably regale you for hours with tales of my personal experiences over the past 40-plus years with John Q. Public, their reactions and interactions with me as a person with cerebral palsy. I've seen all kinds of emotions in their eyes as they stare doggedly as I make my way amongst them, ranging from pity, hatred, anger, disgust, to whatever. I've also noticed they tend to be condescending. I've learned to wear a mask in public, either stone-faced or a great big smile, depending on my mood.

Now I understand that much of this is simply human nature, we are all curious when something or someone deviates from the norm, and we tend to look at it. The trick is to not make it so blatantly obvious.

As a library clerk in a community college, I deal with a lot of students. Over the years we have had many handicapped students come through our doors. I remember all too well when I was a college student trying desperately to fit in with all the other kids, and I truly empathize with them because I KNOW what they're going through.

Still, sometimes I find myself trying too hard to be overly nice to them, and I know they know what I'm doing, because oh how many times have I had the very same experience, but I find myself doing it anyway. You know, smiling at them till your face hurts, and talking a little too loud. So I guess it's good to know that human nature is human nature, whether AB or disabled.
