It wasn't long ago that I said, "I'll kill myself before going into a power wheelchair." Lucky for me, God had other plans for my life. It was not to end so short. I'll be an old man next month (Nov. 99) at 30.
I feel older than that at times. It is as if my FSH Muscular Dystrophy has aged me beyond my years. Maybe it is because I was around grown ups more than I was kids my own age. Not being able to do the things that the other kids could do all the time. I tried, however -- always seeming unhappy in my efforts.
I never thought I find a love or be loved. My one true love became the bottle for many years. I mention all of this because I fear somone out there my be reading this story with some of the same thoughts and ways of thinking I once had.
This, too, is a part of advocating. "What are you talking about? What does he mean this is a part of advocating?" For me, advocating and volunteering goes hand and hand. We must tell our stories of struggles and our times of triumph. We must advocate to save the lives of those who have not yet pulled themselves out of the pit of hell.
I thank God if you're saying, "I never had that problem." Even if you never felt that way, don't you think that you still owe something to the others out there who need your help? Volunteering comes into play when you give yourself to others.
Not to pat myself on the back, but I'll be speaking at the Annual MDA Thanksgiving Day dinner in Nashville, TN on Nov. 15th. There will be about 300 people there. "I could never do that!" I just heard someone cry. Well, I thought that, too, until I took a Speech class at College.
Keep in mind that helping one is better than helping none. If you can help lift the soul of one person who's stuck in the pit, hell, who sees no hope, no light at the end of the tunnel, then you have helped a lot. Take someone to a support group meeting. Some may need A.A. first before working on other things.
I hope by now that when you hear or read the words "volunteering" or "advocating" that you think of what you can do to help. It's not just putting a few coins in the jar at the counter of your local store.
