I wonder how many of us are aware of the funding that state rehab. receives every year to rehabilitate our brothers and sisters. $2.0 billion in federal grants and $645 million in state funds was spend on vocational rehab. services. The last date I have statistics on in front of me are for 1995.

1.3 million adults were enrolled in rehab services. That number represented 12 percent of the total population of disabled adults of work age.

The amount of funding has grown each year as has staffing of these programs. The last year I have data for. 57 percent of case services moneys went to staffing and other costs of these vocational rehab programs.

Federal legislation has been strengthened over past several years to mandate client control and participation in rehab. programs. The legislation has also mandated that these programs give priority to hiring clients. If you are thinking about entering employment, you should link with other individuals with disabilities and get copies of the vocational rehab act of 1973 as amended and study it together.

Know your rights and be ready to insist on them being met. Don't take no for an answer; insist on explanation for ever decision made about your case. Keep very good records and always have the phone number of the state office or the supervisor for your area rehab office.

If you are dissatisfied with your counselor, call them and. if they don't answer your questions, confute on up the chain until you get an answer. It is your right, and the program exists to serve you. You should know that rehab data is most times exaggerated and distorted. Hold people accountable who work with you and, remember, you pay their salaries. The goal should be quality work at a wage that you can sustain yourself on.
