Freedom (in general) was hard won to begin with, and in order to keep it, people must continue to fight for it. In the disabled community, this is especially true. In an overall, blanket sense, disabled people were raised to "be good and grateful" and that to act in a manner contrary to the "happy crip" (or in my case, jolly blink) stereotype would mean that you're maladjusted.
We'll I've got news for people who think that way; History, at least the history most often remembered, is peopled by boat rockers trumpeting their various causes. In the times in which they lived, they too, were considered maladjusted. This isn't just a disabled phenomenon, this fear of public opinion has dogged civil rights and other movements of the past as well.
Even when people have very little to lose in relation to what they would gain if they advocated for themselves and forced the hands of the public, often, they still act as if they fear imprisonment in some sort of Orwellian "reeducation" camp if they ROCK THE SOCIAL BOAT! (of course, in some cases, fear IS justified) Still others, who get SOME of the access they're due, act grateful for what they have and happily live out their lives in the gilded cages (residences, Contrived employment schemes etc.) that society provides to keep them quiet.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't that disabled boat rockers aren't grateful for healthy forms of social support. On the contrary, not only are they grateful, but would like the opportunity to pay society back. This will never happen if we aren't treated as equal citizens. Having equal access, and having destroyed artificial barriers to employment, perhaps many more disabled people could live without the social "help" so often cited as compensation for inaccessibility!
That said, if people want this dream to come true, they have to learn that there won't always be someone else to take the "bad guy" role on their behalf. If disabled people REALLY want equality, we, as individuals and collectively, have to be willing to fight for our own rights, and sometimes to sacrifice present comfort for the sake of the future.
Forget public opinion which holds that minority silence and polite conversation are ALWAYS the best roads to equality. Their argument is that equality takes a long time and that people should be willing to stay the course (continuing the boat analogy) and that it would be smooth sailing if only they wouldn't capsize their boat. Though sometimes this does work, a time has come in the evolution of the disabled movements that this is no longer acceptable. The laws (at least here in 'the West') are ON the books, essentially written by the polite who stayed the course. Writing laws is not hard, and doesn't usually require more than the ability to speak eloquently. ENFORCING laws can be next to impossible if you aren't willing to stand up for yourself and get dirty in the process. If that includes being dunked every now and again for your cause, so be it!
Along with rights come responsibilities, and one of them is that we fight - for our rights.
