Those of us who grew up in an alcoholic household understand habitual deference. We acquired that for other reasons: it was a survival technique against the alcoholic's daily erratic and dangerous behavior. Whatever survival behavior worked yesterday never seemed to work today and you figured out the safest thing to do was to disappear. When you couldn't do that, deference worked the best. Eventually that is who you became, Deference.

What do you learn from that? Well, don't feel, don't talk, don't ask. Don't be, don't live, don't get too close. And lie to and about your family, your life and yourself.

As I get older and learn more, I find that each of us has a cross to bear. Some of our crosses seem easier than others. The times I feel myself wishing I were someone else I remember that I can't just take that snippet of what I'm seeing. I have to take on that person's whole life. Would I want that?

Well, my cross has helped me to understand, empathize and become aware that others have struggles, too. I may not have had your experience, but I can relate to your pain through the pain I've felt. And I can be encouraged by reading and sharing and finding that real people are broken people and through God's grace we all can find our way to the person that is buried inside. You know, the one that counts.
