Story

I must tell that my story can be compared a lot with that of Sue's. I came from Holland to the States to marry my husband. We had a child who was born in Holland. My husband was stationed there in the Army. Everything went well until we got here.

His family couldn't stand me because they couldn't give my husband up. He is a mamma's boy who can't live without his mother. My life was doomed from the moment I came to Minnesota. After a year living here I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. That gave my in-laws a reason to make my life hell even more.

They would tell me that I wasn't a Christian but the devil because I had this disorder. They started to discriminate against me because of my disease. In the end, my husband took their side and blamed it on my Bipolar. Last year I spend 3 weekends in an Mental health institution because of him and his family.

I live by myself now with my six year-old daughter and I'm happy. I'm on medication, and, even though life is tough, I hang in there. My husband recently denied his own daughter and that has hurt me a lot, but I'm not going to let him dig my grave. Even though I'm happy now, it's sad that he said the marriage vows -- which also include -- "in sickness and in health." It's a shame people use diseases and disorders to get out from under married life.
