When have you unintentionally reinforced stereotypes about people with disabilities?

My original l1/10/98 posting:
I have been divorced almost 6 months. Previously, my ex-husband would send me most of his paycheck, to cover the mortgage and living expenses for our son and me. Then, suddenly, when he decided to file for divorce, in another state, the money decreased to about a third.
Now, that we are divorced, it is only about $200.00 for child support that the Army requires him to pay. The house is going to be foreclosed sometime soon. I have been unable to get a job. I am on several medications. I have no problems with raising my son, but I can't seem to make any money. I do get disability benefits.
I was diagnosed while married to him. He has a history of abusing me on a few occasions. I wonder if that could have something to do with it ( stimulating the onset of bipolar disorder)? I feel sure that he is divorcing me either because he has a new love, or the effects of my manic depression.
I am now compliant with all of my drugs. I haven't always been because of the side effects. It seems like he ought to have to pay me maintenance as long as I need it. I am halfway through funeral college. I feel sure I will be able to get a job when I complete it. In the meantime, I am worried about becoming homeless, and his trying to take our son, to whom he has barely paid attention to in the last few years (he is eight).
I cannot find any legal information about this. Can anyone help? We were married ten years, and he is in the Army. Thanks
My Update:
I had to quit funeral school because of the expense. I found a job writing for a small newspaper, but not much has changed. He is going to try and not have to pay me the percentage of his retirement that I may be due, he says, because I was a hindrance to him being promoted, which is not true. I encouraged him to get more education, and I was loyal to him, and cared for our son while he was out of the country for 3 years, off and on.
I live in a small town, and it is hard to find a job and someone I trust to care for my son. I put $30,000.00 inheritance into the house, before I knew he was going to divorce me. I cannot stand the idea of losing my first and beloved home.
I have a lawyer, but the first one I had didn't even know about the fact that I could continue to receive health care benefits similar to Champus, covering pre-existing conditions for up to 36 months. But I found out about it too late, past the 90-day period. My medications can be up to $300.00-$400.00 dollars a month.
When we were married, I used to worry about my future and the fact that I lost my license as an R.N., he used to reassure me that he was my retirement. Oh, how things can change. I would just appreciate any advice. Thanks. Sue
