Story

Shattering stereotypes! This along with many other things occupies most of my time. I am the mother of three children, my oldest son has a disability. Which, by the way, I rarely mention unless of relevance to the subject at hand. I also work as a self-advocacy advisor and support person with a wonderful man who also has a disability. We conduct numerous workshops on "Sensitivity" "People First Language" and "Shattering Stereotypes."

It never ceases to amaze me when I look at people nodding in recognition during these workshops. Nodding in recognition of the things that they or others might say or do that reinforce stereotypes about persons with disabilities. As a parent I notice that people have imposed stereotypes on my son such as....he does not use words to speak, therefore he cannot understand what is said to (or around) him. The assumption that as a person with a disability he should attend a separate school and the only future he has will be in a sheltered workshop or living in a group home.

Much of my time is spent in "teaching" others that HE does not need to be fixed, THEIR ATTITUDES AND PERCEPTIONS DO! And then we have those people that (since he uses a wheelchair) just feel compelled to pat him on the head! My 4 year old daughter summed it up one day when a stranger "petted" him. She looked at this person like they had just fell from the atmosphere of another planet and sweetly said "Please do not pet my brother, he is not a pet just shake his hand"
