Oh, yes, I am familiar with this odd behavior, too. I am a foster parent to an adult with disabilities, and I think people do this because of their uneasiness in the situation.

We were at a birthday party last weekend and not only was he given extra ice cream (four times what others were offered) but, because he made a gestural comment about a hat someone was wearing, he was given the hat!!!

Now, do I go through life thinking, if I compliment you on your hat, you will give it to me?

People do silly things, that's for sure!
