In February and March of 1987, at the age of forty, I had a series of small strokes that impaired my memory and often left me hunting for appropriate words. I had, also, been born with a birth defect called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that resulted in bilateral club feet and what is commonly referred to as extreme "double joints." The surgery to correct the malformation of my feet left me with stiffened, painful ankles and poor balance. By the time I was 12 years old, I had completely blown the anterior cruciate ligament of my left knee. The bottom line of all this is that I had poor balance from early in life and the strokes, while not paralyzing, increased my problems to the point that a wheelchair was long past a good idea.

Once I overcame the idea that the wheelchair represented the total end of my social life, I began to go to lectures in the community that interested me. Upon entering the hall for my very first foray into the public arena, I was dismayed to discover no wheelchair seating except for one behind a pole in the very last row.

After I had signed in, this very helpful organizer grabbed onto the push handles of my chair and pointed me in the direction of this space, from where I could neither hear nor see. I informed this woman that the proposed seating was unacceptable when a terrible screeching from the loud speakers occurred. This woman continued to talk to me over the racket. I pointed to my ear and said that I could not understand what she was saying.

To my surprise, her mouth dropped open, and she exclaimed, "Of course, you're deaf, too!" She hastily ran to the front of the lecture hall, removed a chair and wheeled me up to the front row.

As it turned out, it was the best seat in the house. This woman was the chief organizer for that particular series of lectures, and she attended them all. Each time I signed in, she took control of my chair and placed me in the honored seat. I always felt a little guilty about confirming a negative stereotype, but not guilty enough to tell the truth and be forced to sit in the only other empty space--behind that blasted pole.
