A Fish Tale by Jack Merica
A Wiper is a hybrid fish, a mix of White and Striped Bass. It took twenty-seven years to catch my first Wiper. That's how long I've been fishing.
My Dad took me fishing for the first time when I was about eleven. It was a bright Saturday morning when he went to the PX at the Naval Station in Long Beach, CA. to pick up a few things for my Mother. When Dad came home I discovered he had also bought a fishing rod. I looked over the fishing rod my Dad was holding with a curious eye. I could see that it was a heavy action Shakespeare rod matched with a Penn bait-casting reel. The reel had been strung with heavy black, braided, nylon line. I watched as Dad tested the rod's strength by bending it in his two strong hands. He looked at me and said, "This ought to do. Here you go." With that he put the rod into my hand.
The next day my Dad and I headed out to Pier 16 at the Naval Station. We spent a lazy afternoon trying to just catch something. I knew my Dad was getting frustrated. It's hard to teach an 11- year-old with one arm and three fingers on his hand how to cast.
I remembered this on the day I went to my local hardware store and bought a piece of PVC pipe, an endcap, a 2" long bolt and some jam nuts. I brought this assortment of seemingly unrelated odds and ends of hardware and dumped the bag on the living room coffee table. (I'd had a hole drilled in the endcap by an associate at the hardware store.) I sat down on the loveseat placed the bolt through the hole in the endcap. I threaded on the jam nuts. Finding my plastic cement, I applied a liberal amount to the inside walls of the endcap and placed it on one end of the pipe.
My wife and her friend were watching me with amusement. They were thoroughly confused when I left the room and returned a moment later with my prosthetic arm. When I removed the hook and threaded the pipe onto the arm in its place they looked at me like I had lost my mind. I glanced at them as I strapped on my arm and said "What?!… It's an articulated fishing rod holder!" They both shook their heads and went about their business.
The next day I set out with my new rod holder and got thoroughly skunked. Disappointed, I went home vowing that the next weekend, Memorial Day weekend, I would catch something worthy of my invention.
Sunday, May 24, 1998. Dawn was still an hour and a half off when I woke up my family. I piled my wife and two children into our van and we headed to the reservoir. We unloaded our gear and set up on the beach. My children immediately started pestering me to rig their rods. Forty-five minutes later I had all four rods baited with the lines out.
I strapped on my arm and sat down for a Coke and a smoke. I had tired myself out with all this activity with the sun not even up for an hour yet.
All of the sudden my wife, who was off picking up cans on the beach, started yelling at me to get my rod. I looked over to my right and my rod was dancing furiously in the sandspike. I ran over to my rod and snatched it up. Pulling it straight back, I set the hook on something strong. I placed my rod in the holder I had made and the fight was on. Reeling hard and pulling with my body I watched as my line cut back and forth on the water.
The fish broke the surface with a powerful jump and did a little tail dance trying to throw my hook. It was to be of no avail for that fish and after a fight that seemed to an hour but was only a minute or two, I pulled him onto the beach. It was a Wiper, my first one. Twenty-one inches long and just a tad over four pounds.
A friend from work was fishing with his son nearby. He helped me to remove the hook and place the fish on my stringer. That was the only fish caught that day. My wife and kids were disappointed that they didn't catch any fish that day. However, they were happy and excited about Daddy's Wiper. As my son put it, "He caught it with his arm."
